Ceramical : Joint Councils Access for all Abilities

ceramicsclass-urs-scsm.jpg

Ceramical is an Arts opportunity for people with physical disabilities and sensory and neurological disorders including Acquired Brain Injuries. It is an initiative of Joint Councils Access for All Abilities in Melbourne. Originally started with the idea of participants learning to make clay sculpture but as time went by it has diversified and people bring ideas and I help work out how best to create what ever it is they wish to make.

Linden Centre for Contemporary Art - Post Card Show 2007 -

ursulasjan07004-300w.jpg

My latest works are on show at the Linden Centre for Contemporary Art in St Kilda. The works are a marked change in direction for me moving away from my previous embossed surface technique. These ceramic paintings are created by intuitively using colours and building up layers of brush strokes. Eventually an image emerges or form is constructed that gives light to what I have created. In the case of "What, no Water?" the same method was applied but I eventally imposed the image over the top. This work is a response to global warming and to Australia experiencing its worst drought on record over most of the country with many states experiencing harsh water restrictions. The Linden Post Card exhibition is an annual event featuring work by over 1,000 artists and is described "as a great noisy celebration of creativity". Exhibition details are: St Kilda Centre for Contemporary Arts - 26 Acland Street, St Kilda. Exhibition runs from 3rd February - 17th March 2007. Opening hours are Tuesday-Sunday 1-6pm

Water Wall Mural: Veg Out Community Garden St Kilda

veg-out-mural-urs-scsm.jpg

I was commissioned by South East Water in 2005 to make a ceramic wall mural at the Veg Out gardens along with artist Salvator Lolicato and community members. The event was for the launch of Water Week and many people of all ages took part making tiles using imagery inspired by the Water Wise message. The resulting colourful mural is enjoyed by many and is educational in content even including a desalination plant.

Kensington Management Company: Bouncing Over Boundaries Festival

pooltree-urs-scsm.jpg

In 2005, I was commissioned to go into four schools and work with year six students to combine their efforts to create a wall mural at the Kensington Pool, Melbourne. The mural was unveiled on the day of the festival and every one present enjoyed a barbecue, played games and introduced themselves to their peers and older students from the schools they would be moving on to next year. The object of the exercise was to help foster a sense of belonging and community. The children embossed individual images onto tiles of what their community meant to them and I used these to create an image of a tree to portray this.
